The Shiba Inu is one of the most elegant and beautiful dog breeds. It is also one of the most ancient dog breeds in the world, originating in Japan, and it exhibits wild dog characteristics. They have perfect posture, a beautiful coat, and always appear to be smiling.

The puppies are cuddly little puffballs. When you take them for a walk everyone wants to pet them, and you will be constantly complimented for his or her beauty.
But, simply wanting a Shiba Inu because it looks so cute is not a good idea. It is a complicated breed, and you should spend time with a Shiba Inu before you commit to being an owner. Shiba Inus are not for everyone. By nature, they aren’t as easygoing and sociable as other breeds. This blog is going to focus on the personality traits of the Shiba Inu and things you should know. Understanding Shiba Inu’s personality trait will help you decide if this is the dog for you and give you the upper hand when it is time to start training.
They’re stubborn. Shiba Inus were bred to hunt small animals like birds and rabbits.

They are intelligent, cunning, and independent thinkers that make their own decisions. This background contributes to their natural stubbornness. My dog, Beau, lives up to this reputation. The best example I have of this behavior is quite simple and frustrating. I’ve never owned a dog that didn’t come running looking for love when I called his name. Don’t get me wrong. Beau is a very loving dog. He cuddles closely with me on the couch and gives lots of kisses, but it is only on his terms. I am not able to force, much less even encourage the attentive behavior. I’ll pat on the couch asking him to sit with me and he’ll just stare me down as if saying, “you want me to come there? No. I'd rather sit by myself."

Then, after I ignore him, he’ll be curled up on my side kissing my cheek. There is a lot of love if you can wait for it. You need to decide if this type of behavior will work for you.

Some people say they have a cat-like personality. That being said, they are extremely faithful and loyal to their owners.
Beau exhibits strong loyal and protective characteristics. We are currently having construction done at the house I live in, so we have painters and trim carpenters coming and going. I remember one time when I was sitting in the living room in a corner overstuffed chair with an ottoman.

One of the workers started walking toward me to ask a question and Beau jumped up on the ottoman in between us and aggressively growled showing his teeth. He made sure that man came no closer.
Shiba Inus have a rebellious nature. They are brave and independent kind of like a rebellious teenager. They constantly push boundaries and are not afraid of anything. They act like a big dog in a little dog’s body. I read somewhere that they used to help hunt down boars and even bears!
In my next blog, I’ll share stories about Beau’s many escapes and wild adventures. I'll also provide some advice for making your Shiba Inu a pet you will cherish.
