Sly Like a Fox! The Shiba Inu...

Kjax

Keep your Shiba Inus on a leash! You can never trust your Shiba Inu, no matter how loyal he is to you, off a leash. They will catch a sent and be off on the hunt. They are agile escape artists, too, so make sure your home and yard are secure or you are sure to be putting up “lost dog” signs.

I have so many stories about times Beau went off on an adventure. He is always looking for the opportunity to run free. I must be careful when talking to someone at the front door. If the door is cracked too much he will slip out and be gone. If you have lots of activity at the house for a party or with construction workers, it is best to hook him up on a 30’ leash inside the house. Otherwise, the inevitable will happen. I’ve learned the hard way. I remember one time, we were at a beach house in Isle of Palms, SC. Beau was a puppy and this was new territory for him. He had only been on a couple of walks in the neighborhood. It was nearly 11 PM. My mom had her tennis girlfriends at the house. At some point in the evening, the Beau slipped out the front door with one of the guests. He was nowhere to be found and it was pitch dark. We searched for hours and ultimately called security and Isle of Palms police for assistance. The beach house backed up to a rather busy street so we were really concerned that he would be hit by a car. We thought he was gone. As we drove back to the house after a long search, we noticed the cute little fluff ball was sitting up at the front porch waiting for us. He had been seen by neighbors blocks away so this was a huge surprise. He figured out his way home. Such relief. That’s when we started using long yard leashes inside the home, as well.

Beau thinks it is fun to get out and have us chase him. He will juke left and right. Let us get close and then bolt off in another direction. It isn’t worth chasing him because he is too quick. for this reason, it might be a good idea to always keep a short leash on your Shiba Inu at the home. Another reason to keep your Shiba Inu on a short leash is just in case you get the privilege of meeting the “devil dog”. They flat out lose their minds sometimes.

Yes, Shiba Inus look sweet and loving, but if you get near something that is theirs and they don’t like it, you will see a psycho devil dog come out. This is in their nature, unfortunately. We thought it was funny at first that Beau would get so jealous when we’d hug our mom. But a couple of times he has snapped at us. Yes, even with proper training, this breed will bite. They are protective of their owners, food, and toys. Be careful with Shiba Inus. For this reason, I do not think families with small children or other small pets should own this dog.

In my next blog, I will share information about training and Shiba Inu care.
