After reading the prior blogs you might be thinking we must not have trained Beau properly. Not true at all. In fact, we invested heavily and sent Beau to “Dog College”, www.thedogcollege.com, for advanced obedience training when he was a puppy.

We knew what we were getting ourselves into with this breed. I recommend you do the same. Additionally, our family was experienced with owning dogs. We have had great success training prior dogs. If you haven’t owned and trained a dog previously, I don’t recommend you adopt or buy a Shiba Inu.
The Shiba Inu just has an extra spirit. They can be difficult to train because of their intelligence and stubbornness. They need consistent reinforcement during the first six months of life to learn basic obedience and commands. The result will be less frustration and less time spent disciplining. It is important to note that Shiba Inus respond to positive teaching, not punishment.
The really good news is Shiba Inus are known for being very clean dogs. Potty training is easy because they want to keep their space clean. They will groom themselves. They can be seen licking their paws like cats. They avoid puddles while walking. The dogs have self-cleaning coats that repel dirt, so owners don't need to wash them as often as other breeds. And this is a really good thing because Shiba Inus hate baths.
Have you heard the Shiba Inu scream?
Before you buy a Shiba, prepare for the
Shiba Inu scream. Your neighbors will think you are torturing your poor pup. This mrzombieboobs YouTube video of a Shiba Inu getting a bath helps describe what I mean.

Beau sounded just like this when we bathed him. But it didn't stop there. If we put him out in the yard to play (on a 40' long leash) he would scream like this when he was ready to come in. You would have thought he was being so mistreated. I know there were times when Beau was a pup that the neighbors checked on him to make sure he was okay. We all got used to his scream with time. The good news is Shiba Inus are not noisey dogs and rarely bark.
Shiba Inus need a lot of attention even though they may not seem super interested in you when you want their attention. They are intelligent and high-energy dogs that need lots of exercise. If you don’t have time to walk and play with your dog, choose something other than a Shiba Inu.
